Hi Everyone!!
Happy Wednesday! Im here again with another of my current obsessions. Thats right, my friends. Im completely diggin tablecloths right now. Let me be completely honest here. This sudden interest in tablecloths is totally brought on by pure necessity.
We’ve been on the hunt for a new dining table for a some time now, and while we still haven’t quite found “the one”, our new bentwood chairs definitely have us on the right track. Since design related decisions dont happen quickly in this house, thanks to my difficult wife who wont just let me have my way, we will be living with our current table for a while. In the interim I’ve been giving some serious thought to incorporating a tablecloth to the mix.
Our table is not at all the style we want so using a tablecloth could be a great way to draw attention away from it unil we come up with a permanent solution. You could see my experimentation with some fabric in my recent Craigslist score post.
I do have some reservations, though.
I didnt actually grow up with one so Im not sure how practical they are? I know a lot of folks drag the linens out for the holidays or special occasions, but Im not sure about their day to day performance? I mean, I live with a 5 and 10 year old and getting them to keep thier food on their plates is a daily battle! Its definitely something to think about.
I also have some reservations about how it will look. When I think of the tablecloth my mind always goes immediately to the super stuffy overly formal dining room with the big yellowing lace doiley draped across it. Not a good look! If I do decide to give one a go Ill be looking for these three criteria: 1. that it be chic. 2. that it be casual-ish 3. id prefer it to have some type of pattern to help mask the battle scars its sure to endure at the hands of the kids.
Its times like these I wish I knew how to sew.
Here are a few examples of the tablecloth done right..(in my humble opinion, of course)

I grew up using tablecloths, we often also used placemats on top of the tablecloth so that the immediate mess would be captured on the placemat. it also forced us to be careful with our actions at the table….deliberate in picking up and setting down silverware or drinking glasses. when messes did happen, the tablecloth got a stain treatment and was laundered immediately after dinner. i dont recall my mom having to get rid of a nice tablecloth after a mess.

I have the same reservations. I don’t even trust my grown friends with a tablecloth at a dinner party. Would it be possible for you to do a runner instead? That’s kind of my compromise.

I use table clothes all the time. As a matter of fact in Germany (where I’m from 🙂 most people don’t even go to a restaurant if they don’t have table clothes! It’s the most simple detail that makes a huge difference and I grew up that way even at home.
So YES to the tablecloth for me!
