Hi Everyone!!
So who wants to know what my favorite fall food/drink is? If you guessed pumpkin or spice anything you would be wrong! For the real answer and few more random Shavonda facts head over to my good friend Sarah M. Dorsey’s blog to find out. I absolutely adore Sarah and I’m so honored to be guest posting for her today while she and her hubby are trying to get settled after their recent cross country trek. I cant wait to see what she has in store for her new place.
Today I wanted to pop in and show you guys a super easy way to makeover that super generic, “Hollywood strip” vanity lighting so many of us inherit with our homes.
Every bathroom in our house has them so when I set out to revamp the powder room I knew I wanted it to go. It wasn’t in the budget to go out and purchase a brand new light fixture so I thought of a way to update the existing one.
To take it from looking generic and outdated I gave it a couple coats of spray paint and replaced the bulbs with vintage inspired Edison bulbs. I used the same Rustoleum Hammered finish spray paint I used to update our front door hardware.
I really like the vintage element they add to the space when the lights are on
Probably the best part is that I didn’t have to deal with any electrical this time! I found the bulbs at Home Depot for $9 for this style. The more traditional shaped bulbs are $8. They aren’t exactly cheap, but its still less than it would cost to upgrade to a new fixture. Oh and I get extra points for keepin this sucker out of the landfill.
Have you upgraded any lighting lately? Until next time….
Xo-Shavonda

Do Edison bulbs come frosted? Or only clear? I LOVE them and I HATE my Hollywood vanity fixture, but I’m worried about the harshness of the bare unfrosted Edison style bulb.
BRH says
Also does the base of the Edison bulb fit okay into the fixture? The fixture sockets look kinda wide.

Hi there! Im actually not sure if the bulbs come frosted. Ive never seen them frosted before, but its possible? Also, yes, they fit very nicely and securely in the sockets. They are standard size like the original light bulbs:)

Guess what??!! I just answered my own question. I found frosted Edison bulbs at http://www.atgstores.com a Lowe’s company. 12 pack frosted Edison bulbs for $26, free shipping. Wow. Thanks! Killer project, by the way. And an answer to my prayers. Bought my house 3 years ago, have been fretting over the hated Hollywood vanity lights every since. I stare at them in disgust but so far haven’t found a reasonably-priced solution. And finally I saw your blog. 🙂

Yay! That’s awesome:) So glad you were able to find a solution. The frosted bulbs sound great. Ill have to keep them in mind for future projects…thank you for sharing:)

The listing says they have an intermediate base though, which I’m not familiar with. I’ll keep searching for standard base. They must exist.

Are the Edison bulbs as bright as the old bulbs?

Do the edison bulbs give off as much light?

Nice upgrade!! It really does make it look so much better. I used to have these in my bathroom when I was younger. It made me feel like a movie star but then again I was 5 😉

Love that idea, Shavonda! We don’t have that style in our bathroom, but when we re-do we need new lighting, and I actually really like that bar with those bulbs…maybe enough to choose it on purpose! 🙂

Awesome I love it! I have a house full of builder grade light fixtures. I’ve been especially wanting to upgrade our bathroom fixture but haven’t wanted to deal with electrical. I think I’ll try this! Just found your blog through Sarah Dorsey’s blog and I love it!
