Happy Friday loves! Oh, and Happy November, too. I hope you all had an awesome Halloween. I know some of you had to post pone your festivities due to Mother Nature, so hopefully she’ll allow you to get your trick or treat on tonight.

During the post I snuck in a couple images of some new to us goods. One was the family room rug and the other was the newly revamped coffee table.
Some of you may remember I found it about a month ago at Goodwill for just under $16.
At first I was undecided as to whether I wanted to cover it in fabric and give it a tufted treatment or if I wanted to go the lacquered approach, so I let it sit in the space for a while to see exactly how we would use it and what would best fit our needs.
I pretty quickly realized that fabric was NOT the way to go in our house. Yes, it would have been super pretty, but It would be a beast to keep clean with a 6 and 11 year old in the house. I also nixed the lacquered idea because I wanted something a bit warmer with more of a natural feel to it Then I came across these guys
I loved the way these looked. They were natural without looking to “rustic”, and were modern without looking to cold. Perfect! Plus it would be easy enough just to wipe it down in case of the inevitable spill or mess.
Since the overall shape, scale, and lines of table I found was pretty close to these I thought Id try to replicate the look. You’ll have to forgive the fact that I didn’t take step by step pics along the way. I did this project solely at night in a “not the prettiest light to photograph in” garage, but Ill tell you how I achieved it.
I started by stripping it with my favorite furniture stripper: Citristrip. I used it on my dining table revamp too and I just love it. Once I got it stripped down I realized the top wasn’t solid wood as I assumed, but veneer instead. I thought my plan would be foiled because from my experience veneer doesn’t take stain very well sometimes, but since I was only going for a weathered look I would be using it as more of a “wash” and not as an intense stain.
After very carefully sanding it with 80 then 220 grit paper with the orbital sander and nicking it up a little bit (for a worn over time effect) I used this to stain for the wash
I only let the stain sit on for about 5 minutes before I started to wipe it away. Again, I was going for weathered and imperfect so I didn’t stress this process so much. Now usually you would not sand after a coat of stain dries, but I did. I gave it just another rough sanding and since I didn’t want a high shine on this piece I then gave it a light coat of polyurethane in satin finish.
After that dried I sprayed the base with some Rustoleum Hammered finish spray paint left over from the front door makeover. I thought it would be good to give it more of a metal like effect.
Its not as “hammered” as I was hoping for so I may redo the base later on down the line. I’ve been wanting to work with this paint for a while now.
Anyway…I think it turned out great. I love the wash of gray. It adds just the right hint of color to the piece.
I really love the results and for the cost of a small can of stain you cant beat it.
We are really enjoying it. I love it when projects turn out how you hope.

I have never been a fan of graywash but I think you will turn me into one. It just looks so perfect on that piece that now I’m rethinking a future project. I love it! And I can’t believe that’s laminate.

Good call on the gray wash stain. It looks gorgeous! A normal wood stain could have looked a little blah, but this is the perfect interest.
