Hi Everyone!
Happy Wednesday loves. We’ve come to a crossroads guys. As you know, we’ve been actively searching for a new sofa for a while now. And by a while I mean over 2 years. Its a sad state of a affairs this indecision. I’m not gonna lie guys, I’m afraid to make the wrong choice. A sofa, especially a great one, is a major financial and visual investment. And when I consider the fact that we now have only one living space, it makes the decision even more crucial to get right. This thing has to have it all: comfort, ease of maintenance, holding power, and serious style.
Stylistically we’ve managed to narrow it down to two options:
We love them both for various reasons. They are both classic and timeless in terms of design which means they have major staying power, and with the way I like to shake things up this is a good thing. The chester has had my heart for years and years, so that’s a major draw toward it. I recently sat on one and was surprised at how comfortable it is. I like that the arms and back are a bit lower since it’ll be sitting in front of the window. To me the chester feels more casual and relaxed while the tuxedo style, on the other hand, is super sexy. It offers a more tailored look, and I feel like it would add instant sophistication to the room. I cant attest to the comfort because I’ve never sat in one. We both love that neither one has back cushions. NEVER AGAIN IN LIFE.
Either one could work. Id love your input guys. Any chester or tuxedo sofa owners out there? Until next time…

New reader here, and probably too late to weigh in, but I have to say – chesterfield all the way! I have a similar chesterfield and it is my favorite piece of furniture in my living room. Cheers!
shavonda says
Hi Shannon! Of course its not too late to chime in:) The Chesterfield is absolutely the winner. Im looking around now for just the right one:) Thanks so much sweets
Kristin says
While I love, love, love the look of both couches, I personally don’t think I could go with either of those. The Chesterfield would be too low in the back for my man to be comfortable on & the Tuxedo’s arms are too stiff & straight for my love of stretching out on the whole couch.
Good luck on choosing the right one for you guys though, they are both beautiful so looks-wise you’ll win either way! 🙂

Thanks sweets.

If there’s lots of lounging that will be happening on this sofa, then Chesterfield all the way! I like the Tuxedo better but I can’t imagine trying to watch a movie on that!
Sarah @ Life On Virginia Street says
Chesterfield!! As long as you don’t mind the super low backs they usually have though. My husband vetoed them long ago because of that.
shavonda says
Hey sweets! I actually dont mind the low back. We arent super tall so its not uncomfortable. Plus I prefer it since the sofa will be placed in front of a window. Thanks for chiming in pretty lady:)
Kristina @ My Own Home Blog says
I’m going to be 100% honest here, there is no couch in existence that can compete with the chesterfield! Hands down that’s the winner! 🙂
shavonda says
HAHAHAHA! I LOVE IT! I think you may be right my friend:)
Heather | Decor Fix says
I have had a love affair with Chesterfields for a long time, however I think the tuxedo is a nice transitional piece. The clean lines are so nice.
shavonda says
Hey girl hey! Yes my love affair with Chesterfields run deeeeeeep. Youre right about those lines of the tuxedo though. They’re tempting.
Janet says
Chesterfield! More stylish and always a classic! Can’t wait to see what you decide!
Katie says
I like the modern lines of the tuxedo…but for me it would also depend on the other pieces in the room. I like a mix of styles, so may be convinced of the chesterfield if most of your other pieces are more clean-lined. Either way, I’m sure you’ll love a new sofa! 🙂
shavonda says
I love a mix of styles in a space too Katie. I think I’m leaning more toward the chesterfield because of its versatility and I adore the look of them in eclectic spaces. Thanks for weighing in:)
cassie says
i would go with the chesterfield- you’ve loved it for so long and it is just gorgeous! to me it also looks much cozier and more inviting. you can get sexy straight lines in the other pieces you bring into the space.
shavonda says
Ah! You are so right Cassie:)

Chesterfield all the way! Just not in white…that would be my choice. We currently have a sofa similar to the tuxedo and 1) you do feel enveloped no matter your size (as Linda G said) and 2) the armrests causes serious neck pain if you try to use it to relax while watching tv or read. To me the chesterfield invites relaxing, inviting conversation and enjoyment of whatever activity you’re participating in in the room while the tuxedo is a bit more formal. And if for 18 years you’ve been wanting a chesterfield…get one!
shavonda says
Hi Nicole! Thanks so much for your input. I am pretty skeptical of the arms of the tuxedo style sofa. Especially since we watch a lot of tv, lounge, and entertain in the space.
Elisabeth says
My vote is the chesterfield- it just looks so much more comfortable- especially the arm rests. I feel like the tuxedo arms would not be good for lounging (too straight and too tall), plus the chesterfield is so classic and beautiful.
shavonda says
Hi Elisabeth! Its hard to get past the timeless essence of the chesterfield for sure:)
Anu says
The armrest on Chesterfield looks more comfy, when you want to stretch out and relax. I would avoid the white couch, and go blue like the tuxedo!
shavonda says
Hi Anu!! white is a defninte no-no friend! I love a blue sofa, but since we already have teal walls and lots of color in other areas in the space we will most likely go for a neutral. Im thinking a midtone or deep grey:)
Linda G says
If you ever like to rest your elbow on the arm of a sofa, I would caution you against the tuxedo. Maybe it’s just because I’m short (5’4″), but I feel like I’m getting sucked down into an abyss on one of those. Lovely to look at, yes, but just not practical for me. Both are classic pieces. I feel that the tuxedo has a bit of a modern edge to it. Chesters have been around forever and really look “old school” in the best way. I think you can have then recovered forever and no one will ever know how young or old they are. Particularly lovely in weathered leather.
shavonda says
Hi Linda! Ah yes, the ol’ sofa abyss is no fun at all. I never even considered the recover factor with the chesterfield. It can be reinvented over and over again. Thank you for your input love:)
Julie (Being Home) says
I love the Chesterfield! I am on the look out for a new sofa, too. Curious, what was your experience with back cushions? Poorly made sofa?
shavonda says
Hi Julie! Our current couch, which I purchased in 2005 is a very traditional, over stuffed, downfilled style sofa and the back cushion are a major nuisance. Don’t get me wrong, the sofa itself is great quality, but at the time I didn’t take into consideration how much lounging we’d be doing on it. Ive since had a second child so it gets tons and tons of wear. The back cushions are supper saggy and although we fluff the heck outta them they never stay put. We’ve realized that a flat back is much more ideal for us.
Elizabeth @ The Little Black Door says
Now that is a tough choice as I’d be over the moon with either of them. If space is a concern, the arms on the chesterfield will take up a bit more space that the tuxedo so you could use that to help you decide?
Katja | Shift Ctrl Art says
I love both of these. I have had Chesterfields for almost 18 years and have never really grown tired of them. For us, I like the rolled arm because we tend to lie down and watch tv in ours. Other than that, those two sofas are equally beautiful. One reads a bit more casual – the Chesterfield, the other a nod towards elegance. They are both really beautiful. And I hear you on the no back cushions. I love that we never have to fluff our Chesterfields. So practical.
shavonda says
I love your chesters Katja. The rolled arms are the major benefit of the chesterfield for sure. I do want our space to feel inviting and comfortable, especially with the kids and while we entertain.
Sam says
I love them both, but Chesterfield is what I would pick. I love the arms on that one and it seems better suited for families.
shavonda says
Hi Sam! I agree. I think my family would love it. Thank you for your input:)
Sabrina says
I don’t own one of these but I’d absolutely get the blue tuxedo 🙂
shavonda says
Hi Sabrina! I do love the gorgeous modern lines of the tuxedo style sofa. It definitely grabs your attention in a good way:)
Jenna says
You seriously just picked my two favorite styles of couches. And I have no advice for you because I love them both equally! Both are gorgeous though, so either way, ya can’t go wrong!
shavonda says
Oh Jenna..Youre just the cutest. They are both really gorgeous. Its going to be a toughie.
