Hi Everyone!
I’ve come to the conclusion that I absolutely LOVE living in our small home. I was a little concerned about the transition from almost double the space, but I actually don’t miss our larger home at all. Well, except for the fact that we had a finished kitchen and a second bathroom…but in terms of space, nope don’t miss it at all.
One of the challenges I faced was whether or not to scale back on some of the design elements I love because of our now smaller footprint. I sorta questioned my love of deep moody colors, maximalism, and large-scale furniture pieces. Then I stopped. No matter the space constraints my heart wants what it wants. You can thank me later for getting that Selena Gomez song stuck in your head for the rest of the day now. #sorrynotsorry. I’ve decided to talk a lot more about my style as it relates to small spaces. I’m calling this series “Yes You Can”. Today its using deep wall color in small spaces.
I get comments and questions all the time about whether its ok to use dark colors in small spaces. What about lighting? Won’t such a moody color just make the space look even smaller? Cant you only use dark colors in big rooms? RUBISH people! Absolute rubbish. Here’s the thing about saturated color in small spaces: YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN DO IT and it ABSOLUTELY WORKS. The key is taking a space that’s just small or tiny and elevating it into a space that is cozy, intimate, relaxed. Even more so in small spaces dark colors can be your bestie. Sometimes embracing the small and flaunting what’s there can result in really chic and fabulous spaces. Here are some of my fav small spaces that have embraced dark color:
Don’t be scuuuured to use a dark color in a small space guys. It can really be so so good. Until next time…

Just came across your blog and I love it! I agree with you about dark colors, we love them. Anytime I try to go lighter, the family complains that it doesn’t feel cozy enough lol..

you know i love dark walls and none of our spaces are large! 🙂 so glad you posted this because yesterday on AT they posted these gorgeous dark rooms and there were so many negative comments about how people had small spaces and needed light walls- i commented that i loved them and used them in my small home. thanks for sharing!

I think people just innately feel like light = large= better. It saddens me that the most immediate thought is that bigger is better. I love dark moody walls and always will. Your home is def one of my absolute favs Cassie:)

I am so with you on this! I absolutely adore using dark colours. White walls can be beautiful too, but when you use a dark shade in the right way, it can be magical 🙂 Thanks for stopping by my blog by the way! x

Youre more than welcome Patricia! I love your blog. And magical is the correct word for sure. I always feel so unsettled amongst white walls. For me dark rooms just feel right:)
