Hi Everyone!
Happy Thursday friends. Remember when our hallway looked like this
Yeaaaah, I try not to remember either! The funky hand etched paneling was seriously just so ugly guys. I hated it from the moment we got keys to the bungalow, and I knew getting rid of it was going to be one of the first things we addressed when we moved in.
I feel like hallways don’t get nearly enough attention. They far too often get ignored. Yes, they are very utilitarian and generally serve only as a way to get from one section of the house to another, but this is space that can dish out some serious wow factor. Who says these little sections of square footage can’t be just as bold and fun as any other within a home? They most certainly can, and I for one, love a hallway with a little sass.
I really wanted to incorporate a bold pattern into the hallway and have had my heart set on Thibaut’s Tanzania wallpaper for eons!
I mean, it’s just so flippin fabulous…but um, that price tag though…#aintnobodygotfundsforthat. So I did what I usually do and decided to DIY to get the look for less. I turned to my favorite stencil source, Royal Design Studio, and opted for the Cheetah Spots Wall Stencil for this project.
We had some wall damage and discovered some areas that needed to be patched up after removing the paneling so we hired out the work.
I absolutely do not go there with drywall. I’ve repaired a large area before and learned for me its best left to the professionals. It was money well spent to have the job done quickly and correctly.
After giving the ceiling and upper portion of the wall a couple of coats of fresh white paint I got started with the stencil process. Now ya’ll know I’m no stranger to working with stencils. I’ve stenciled both a kitchen and porch floor, but never a wall. I must say, working with a floor is so much easier. Gravity works against you a bit on the wall, but it was still really easy and once I got a groove going, things went fairly quickly. My arms were freakin killing me by the end. Fair warning.
I gave myself a full week to tackle this because of summer vacay, the kids being home, etc. and I and so happy with the outcome.
I opted for high gloss black for the lower half of the walls, and I love it. Due to the age of the house our walls are really imperfect, but that’s what I love most about it. I know flat paint is the go to for hiding imperfections, but in this case I didn’t care.
Since this space is fairly narrow and dark I decided to make the built ins fade into the walls a bit, by painting them two tone as well. I replaced the old hardware with antique glass pulls from D Lawless Hardware.
When we had the drywall repaired we also had electrical run for a ceiling light in the smaller section for hallway near the bathroom and my sons room. That area gets really dark and at night it freaks him out a bit during late night potty runs, so Im on the hunt right now for lighting. As you can see in the pictures above we also need a replacement for the old one that was there. And as a final touch for this area I also want to bring in a couple of runners. I’m hoping for either vintage kilim or boucherouite.
It feels so good to be able to cross another project off the list. Slowly but surely the bungalow is becoming together. Until next time friends…

Such a fun space! Love the black and white! and, having painted lots of walls and one floor, I can totally believe that floors are easier to stencil. Gravity is such a pain sometimes 😉
