Hi Everyone!
Happy Friyay friends. So our girl is turning the big 1-3 guys. That’s right, in a couple of months I’ll officially be the parent of a teenager. Lord help me. I mean where the heck did the time go!
Thus far we haven’t focused very much time or energy on the kids rooms since moving in to the bungalow. We wanted to live in the house for a while before we started making any design decisions in their spaces. My daughter’s room got a fun colored ceiling and we replaced her ceiling fan with our old dining room chandelier, but other than that nothing at all has gone down, or up for that matter, in either her nor my sons room. Its been almost a year since we moved in and we still have sheets tacked up on the wall as window coverings in Bry’s room. It’s a hot ratchet mess and It’s definitely time.
I hesitate to share their rooms very much because I try to respect their personal space, especially with Bry. We want their rooms to be their safe havens and places they create as expressions of themselves, so I havent showed them on social media. My son has given the go ahead to share his and Bry is ok with me sharing her room makeover as well, so I decided Id put together a little visual of what direction we are headed with in her space. This is what her room currently looks like
Bry and I have VERY different tastes when it comes to design. She’s very much like Naomi in that she likes things quite modern. She prefers clean lines and would much rather have something new than vintage. She is ok with some color, but likes to stick to just a couple in a space. This makeover will be happening on a pretty tight budget so there will be some hunted pieces coming in. We’ll be repurposing a few things she already has as well. We are letting her have total control over the makeover, so all the color choices, décor, details, etc. will be dictated by her. Here’s what we came up with as a guide for her new space:
1. Light grey walls /2. Her current light stays /3. Her current bed stays. It’s the Hemnes 4 poster bed from Ikea /4. Clothing storage. She DESPERATELY needs it. I was able to find a great one on CL yesterday. We are thinking coral, but I think she’s toying with black as an option too /5. A gallery wall /6. She’s really into lighted marquee letters. Itll go above her headboard /7. A workspace. She currently does her homework at the dining room table. It’s about time she has a space of her own. Im thinking itll be a welcome addition going into 8th grade/ 8. A dressing mirror /9. Extra seating. Perfect for hanging out with her friends /10. A colorful rug. I like the idea of it being the same color as her ceiling.
We will also be bringing in much needed window treatments, and a few other bits to round things out. I’m really excited to create a space she will enjoy for years to come.
Happy weekend friends. Until next time loves…

Would you mind sharing what program you use for the mood board?
Shavonda says
Hi there! Of Course. I use Polyvore to create my moodboards:)

I just saw your kite makeover that appeared in BHG. 2014. What brand of paint did you use on your cabinets. I painted mine and it has been horrible to apply and chips easily. It was supposed to be the best. What do you recommend.
Shavonda says
Hi there! Im sorry youre having issues with your project. I used Benjamin Moore Aura paint for the upper cabinets and Benjamin Moore Advance paint for the lowers. They are both great formulas and I highly recommend them. The Advance has takes longer between coats, but it dries harder than the Aura. I LOVE the Aura for cabinets though.

Sammie says
Love grey walls? What color did you guys choose?
Shavonda says
Thank you Sammie! I actually have some oops paint ive had for a while that’s gray. Bry likes the color so well use that, but Ill have them mix in some white to lighten it up:) I have no idea what the original color is though.
Sammie says
Aww, thanks for letting me know. I’ve been looking for a nice, light gray color that doesn’t lean green or brown. I might have to get a light blue that looks gray. Any suggestions?
Shavonda says
A few of my fav light greys are Ben Moore Gray Owl, Ben Moore Platinum Grey, Behr Dolphin Fin, Behr Natural Gray. Hope these help sweets.
Sammie says
Woohoo! Thanks!

Welcome to the teen years! My baby just turned 13 and my bff’s oldest turned 13. It’s a whole new world. How fun for her to get to make her own design decisions.
Shavonda says
Thank you Jen. Its been an interesting transition that’s for sure:)

It’s already such a cute space! I shall really look forward to this as I need to crack on with my nieces’ room and I still have done nothing, bless them (good thing they are patient and know Auntie Kimberly is busy lol) 😉 I also love that you are allowing her to call the shots even if her taste is not the same as yours 😉 You’re such a good mom!!

Shavonda says
Thanks Kim. I think its so important to give kids the opportunity to discover themselves and to choose (certain) things for themselves. When I was growing up everything was decided for me by my mom. When I became an adult I had no idea who I was because I wasn’t ever allowed to try to figure it out.
Kimberly Duran says
Yes!!! Totally. My mom let me redecorate my bedroom when I was 14 and I chose everything! I remember how cool it was and how much I loved it 🙂 xxx

Love the ceiling! I can’t show it to my daughter as she would totally want me to paint hers. The color combo is perfect. Good luck with everything!
