Hi Everyone!
Happy Humpday friends. Lets talk sofas…..again.
I get it. Yall are like “Shavonda Im so over you and this damn sofa conversation.” “You’re indecision is driving me insane.” “Girl, #aintnobodygottimeforthat.” I get it. But let me explain.
As most of you know, we’ve been looking to get rid of the big beige beast for 3 years at this point. Before it was just purely because the thing is a big microfiber eyesore, not at all in line with our current style, and we just plain don’t like it anymore. But nowadays its literally falling apart at the seams. Hence the serape covered seat cushions and throw across the back. Our needs have gone from strictly want to need.
Ten years ago when I purchased the sofa it came with a chair and a half…Ive since broken the set up. I custom designed it and it took 10 weeks to get it. I was so excited to have my first “grown up” sofa and its served us well, but its time for something new. My style and life has evolved tremendously since then, so my approach to finding one this time around is completely different from before. Life now dictates some things I didn’t consider.
When we first started seriously looking for a new one I was deadest on a chesterfield.

We had narrowed down the list of things we really wanted in our next couch and it checked all the boxes. I loooved (and still do) the classic design, tufts, and non cushioned back. I was like “Yep, this is IT”. Thennnnn we got a Great Dane and realized our dog + tufts/buttons = not a good idea. Cross that off the list.
Then I was all about the English Roll arm.

Again we’ve got classic design, non cushioned back, and no tufts. Win, win, win right? Wrong. Naomi got one look at one in person and was like “Nope. It’s too traditional looking, and I don’t like the arms. They aren’t comfortable for laying.” Id have to agree with her on that last part. Cross it off the list.
We were pretty much back to square one and then I spotted this guy on IG.
It hit me that we hadn’t even considered something slipcovered til then. Nay and I both agreed that we not only liked the idea of a slipcover, but that it’s probably the best for our household. We both like the easy, relaxed look of it, not to mention the fact that we wont stress about every single spill or worry about Callie so much. We also both agree on a single bench cushion and one with more modern lines than traditional. I absolutely love Erica’s living room makeover and the sofa is my one of my favorite parts.
She reached out on IG and mentioned that it was her favorite and most comfortable couch she’s ever owned, and that with a toddler the comfort and durability is spot on. It’s always good to hear people’s experiences. Especially when the purchase is an investment piece.
The other thing we HAVE to consider here is price. I’m all about splurging on things, and I will in a heartbeat, but we’ve gotta be realistic. We’d love to stay at or under $2500 and I’m finding this wont be easy. We definitely want to get something nice that will last several years, but we just cant justify spending $5000 on a sofa at this point. Unfortunately, that means the beauty above is just out of our reach. We really like the one from Z Gallerie, but its not actually slipcovered, it’s just skirted so it looks as such.
We went to Pottery Barn and checked out the York, which we loved, but they no longer offer it in the bench seat option.
We also considered the Belgian Track Arm collection from Restoration Hardware, but quickly learned the quality might be questionable.
So now we are on the hunt for a slipcovered sofa with clean lines, between 92-96″, and a bench seat for under $2500. Wish us luck. Until next time friends…

Ahhh hun, I feel your pain!! I’ve been indecisive about my kitchen worktops for 3 years now!! LOL! I love my chesterfield of course but I totally feel ya about getting something that will wear well with pets – at the moment, we’re trying to ‘train’ Quito not to get up on furniture and as he’s little it’s not too hard so far (he’ll fall asleep on the floor) but whether that remains the case as he gets bigger (and much better at jumping) remains to be seen – let’s hope he doesn’t have an eye for buttons like Callie!! :-/ Good luck with the search! xxx

Hi Shavonda, this is my first time popping over to your blog and I checked out this post on couches. I too am on the hunt for the perfect couch! We actually have a dane as well (your pup is sooo pretty, I love her blue eyes!)! We let Lucy (our dane) up on the couch and ottoman with us when we watch tv at night. I always lay a blanket down before she hops up but she mostly lays on the ottoman and it’s a tufted piece (that I reupholstered myself)… She hasn’t done any damage to the ottoman, except for the occasional slobber I have to wipe off lol! So my vote is for the chesterfield!

Hi Jessica!! Thank you so much for dropping in and commenting:) Awww a fellow dane mom. I love it. Callie has this thing with buttons. Its weird. She loves them. And by loves I mean she must attack them! LOL. I do love a good chesterfield though. Im holding out hope that I can have one maybe in my studio one day. And I love that you let your baby on your sofa too. They are just such sweet dogs.

I bought the exact sofa you’re looking for 5 years ago from CB2. I’m honestly floored they don’t still offer it. It was the Slipcovered Movie Sofa for under $1500 delivered They still have the Movie Sofa, just not a slipcovered version. I’ve since completely ruined the cover and it’s sitting naked in my living room…
You could consider buying an affordable sofa in the style you like (clean lines, bench seat) and if it’s priced right, having a custom slipcover made? More work I know, but this is clearly important to you!

My mom has a million dogs or so and swears by slipcovered sofas! I have cats, too, so they’re not as foolproof for me….right now we have the sorta slipcovered Karlstad (the covers come off, but not easily; you can’t just take them off and wash them every week or anything), and the cats are leaving it mostly alone, so far. Good luck with the search!

Did you check out Rosa’s store in LA that does custom furniture for really good prices? Clad Home is the name of it (www.cladhome.com). Rosa is the sweetest and incredibly talented- she just did a custom piece for Jordan Ferney from Oh Happy Day.
