Hi Everyone!
Happy Friyay friends. So yall know how much I love our little house, right. Like love it more than peaches love it, and the longer we are here, the more the love grows. We’ve been in the bungalow for alllllmost a year now, and Im always discovering something new to love about it. The original details of the house are way up there on the ol’ love list but as with any house, there are a few things Im not particularly fond of. One of which being the door and window trim.
Ok Let me clarify. There’s nothing wrong with the trim per se, its just kinda blah. I don’t feel like it lends anything to the house over all and honestly it sorta bothers me that it doesn’t. One of my favorite elements in older homes is the old school craftsmanship. Its seeing details you tend not to see so much in new builds. And I always seem to be drawn to millwork and trim. I’m pretty sure our current trim is original to the house and it reminds me of really thick quarter round. As we’ve been painting rooms in the house, for the most part, we’ve painted the trim the same color as the walls because there’s nothing special about it and its so unassuming that I wanted it to visually fade away.
Recently Ive been thinking about how much I really love thick craftsman style trim, especially in old houses.
I feel like the bungalow definitely needs to up its trim game, yall, and Im thinking converting all the existing dinky trim to craftsman style is the way to go. I think it would really add to the charm and overall style of the house. But man is it gonna be a ton of work. Such is life in a fixer upper. When it comes to deciding which elements of the house to change its an internal struggle for me. I never want to feel like I’m stripping away some original detail that makes it special in lieu of something new and not so special. I think in this case, though, Id be adding to the charm with the new detail. I actually kinda feel like the original stuff detracts from the character a bit.
I’ve found some great tutorials on how to easily get the look with standard inexpensive pine boards (here, and here), so Ill eventually start updating the trim throughout the house. What do ya’ll think? Is trim that big of a deal for you guys?
Until next time and happy weekend friends…

Trim is huge for me! I think details like baseboards and trim around window or pretty deep windowsills – really makes a home feel more special and ‘hand crafted’

I think the detailed trim work would be really beautiful for your home. I also like the way you’ve visually made them disapear. But beautiful trim work is definitely better.

Big yes vote from me on the chunky trim! We have nice trim everywhere downstairs in our house, but then just boring thin stuff upstairs…..upgrading it is on my someday list 🙂

I have trim like the bottom picture in almost every room of my house. It bothers me that there are rooms that are different so it’s on our list of to do’s. I love thick trim and have seen some variations that are all nice. We (and by that I mean my dad) redid a bunch of the trim when we made over my daughter’s room and it looks like we’ll be doing the same to our bathroom as we remodel it. We have three styles of trim in our house – the original, like pictured, something that goes towards an Asian feel (or so I think) and then “builder basic” in one room. I think you’ll love your house with craftsman trim!!

They always say… “It’s the details that make the space.” And great trim is a huge detail.
Since you indicate you will be DIY’ing this…maybe start in a room that doesn’t get much use. That way if it’s not perfect, you won’t be staring at it all the time. You’ll get better with each window & door.
I would be happy to just replace our baseboards but hubby does’ think it’s needed.
