Hi Everyone!
Happy Wednesday friends….and Happy November! Its OFFICIALLY fall in my neck of the woods now so I figured today would be a good time to talk a bit about fashion. A little “Wardrobe Wednesday” if you will.
So lately I’ve been thinking alot about capsule wardrobes. Now I know Im not a fashion blogger, but I do LOVE fashion. Next to interiors its my favorite topic. And as it pertains to interiors its been a big topic in #thecottagebungalow as of late because Ive been on a major closet purge kick. It was time for me to really dig in and edit out lots of things that were taking up precious space. Our closet is generous size overall, BUT since its divided evenly between Naomi and I we each only have 2 sections each for all of our clothes, shoes, and accessories. #smallhomeproblems
This was our closet when we first installed it soon after moving in. Its a bit different now as Ive taken away even more clothing space in lieu of a small vanity area in the upper left section. I decided I really needed an area for perfumes, lotions, makeup and other personal care items since our bathroom doesn’t have space for it. But I digress……back to the wardrobe.
Because Ive been purging and getting rid of things I no longer wear, Im left with quite a bit of space to work with. Having this space triggered my thoughts as to HOW I want to fill it moving forward. This is where curating a capsule wardrobe comes to mind….and the concept of investing in really great quality key staple pieces that have longevity, can be easily interchangable, and form the perfect base for incorporating a few trendy pieces every season to keep this fresh and updated.
Im diggin this idea for several reasons: 1. As someone in their mid 30s I think its essential to have a wardrobe that feels very polished, and well thought out. One that contains only pieces that fit incredibly well and that are of great quality. 2. Typically speaking, a capsule wardrobe is comprosed of about 15-20 pieces so its PERFECT for those with tiny closets or limited clothing storage space. When you don’t have the physical room to house 5 sweaters in the same color it forces you to choose 1 really great fitting one to occupy the space. And 3. it makes you spend your money wisely.
Now I know there are those that believe every capsule wardrobe should consist of the SAME essential pieces no matter who its for, but I tend to disagree with that. I think you have to consider who you are, what you like, and your lifestyle. Nothing in life is one size fits all, and this shouldnt be the case for clothing investments either. That being said, Ive already started scouting a few pieces Im really looking to add to my wardrobe and I thought Id share with you my 5 picks for fall and winter….
1.A Long Colored Winter Coat-
So beautiful and classic and never goes out of style. Its one of those pieces that just elevates the look of almost anything, and a great quailty coat will literally last a lifetime. Now immediately red or camel comes to mind, but I also really love the idea of it in lilac, or plum, or green for someone who likes to shake it up a bit and is more daring in their styling…like myself!
I love the deep hue of that one. Also really love this red and lilac option from River Island!
2.A Leather Pencil or Midi Skirt-
I absolutely LOVE a good leather pencil skirt. Ive wanted one for years and its something that will absolutley have longetivity in my wardrobe. Its a piece I know I can dress up or down, for work or a casual Saturday, and that Ill wear and love well into my 50’s. A black one is always a classic, but I also really really love it in camel or a deep burgundy.
3. A Prince Of Wales Blazer-
This guy is suuuuper on trend right now, so it sorta falls into the seasonal/trendy category, BUT its also a timeless piece as well. Blazers will always be a key part of my wardroble and this british menswear print will always be relevant. Im absolutely loving this look right now…from a day at the office to a night out with friends. Target and HM have great affordable options.
4. A Black Heeled Bootie-
It doesnt get much more fall than that. Im on the hunt for both a great chunky heeled and stiletto pair.
5. Oversized Chunky Sweater-
I love the look and feel of these and they are something I grab for as soon as the weather starts to shift and cool down. Its so easy to dress them up or down so I love having one in my wardrobe.
There you have it friends. My top 5 picks for pieces Im loving and looking to add to my fall/winter capsule wardrobe. What do you think about the idea of creating one? Do you have your eye on any special pieces youd like to add to your wardrobe?
Until next time friends….

Im telling you I almost added mules to the list too. You have me giving them serious consideration. I LOVE the way they look on you. But I always feel like I need to me like 3 inches taller to pull them off. Im going to give them a try this fall and see how I like them.

I love the cut of a well made pencil skirt. How have I never considered on in leather?! I’m also thinking I need a plum or deep green wool coat now…
Great list. Can’t wait to see what you select!
