Small Home Big Style: A Plant Filled Bohemian Rental in LA

Hi everyone!!

Happy Monday from NYC friends!  By the time this post goes live I will be in the air approaching the other side of the country! Im so incredibly excited to start the week in a new place taking in all the sights, sounds, and wonder that is NY!!  Ill be here until Wednesday and cant wait to share it all with you guys.  Definitely make sure youre following me on IG as Ill be posting lots in my stories there.  In the meantime I wanted to start us off  this week here on the blog with another amazing Small Home Big Style feature!

Today Im so pleased to have Sara sharing her small home story with us.  I first came across Sara on IG and was immediately drawn to her cozy boho abode.  I then popped over to her blog, Black and Blooms, where the awesomeness continued.  The girls got style for miles, and I knew I just had to have her come chat with me a bit about how she lives and loves in her small space.

My boyfriend, Eddie Dumphy

Rent
How many sq ft is your home?
700
What do you love most about living in a small home?
I love the coziness that comes with living in a small space!
What challenges have you faced?
Our apartment came with a little kitchen with realllly ugly cabinets. Like seriously, bad! One day I just got so sick of looking at them I had Eddie take all the doors off for me, haha! It was actually amazing how big of a difference that one little change made – like night and day! All of a sudden I had all this open shelving I could style, which was really exciting for me. Another challenge is the ugly carpeting in our place – I’ve added lots of layers of pretty rugs on top so the carpet isn’t as noticeable.
Any unique storage solutions?
Not really that unique, but we have a king size bed and all that space underneath is prime real estate! It stays out of sight too, which is great.
What’s your favorite room in your home and why?
Our living room – the fireplace is so cozy! The living room is the main hub of our home, where Eddie and I watch TV, eat most of our meals, and entertain guests.
Which space has been the biggest headache! You know, the one that’s been the most challenging to work with?
Probably the living room as well! It’s gone through so many little changes over the years. Trying to fit my work space into the room was a real challenge. I found a wall mounted shelf desk that was the right dimensions to fit into the only available space in the room, which was lucky!

Do you every wish you had more space?
Yes, quite often actually. But when that thought pops into my mind, I remind myself how lucky we are to live in a space we love, however small it is. And to some people living in 500sq ft or less, our home is huge haha
If you could do it all over again, would you still choose to live small?
Unfortunately it’s not much of a choice in the area of LA we live in – small space living is all we can really afford! But the advantages of living small outweigh the negatives in my mind. I’m just thankful we have a home of our own together, in the city I love.
Best piece of small space living advice?
When you’re living small, there’s no room for furniture or décor you aren’t absolutely in love with. Purge what you don’t need and try to only bring things in that you’re crazy about and will actually get a lot of use. I have to remind myself of my own advice all the time!
You guys! I mean….I. Just. Cant.  I love Sara’s home so much.  The thing I love the most is that she hasnt let the fact that its a rental stop her from making it into a home that so personal and lovely.  Im obsessed with all the cozy layers and textures. And what a genius move it was for her to just remove the cabinet doors!  I mean, what better way to completely transform the look of a space FOR FREE!  I also really love what she said about purging and bringing in only the things youre crazy about.  Its sooooooo hard guys.  Especially when youre crazy about all the things. Literally.
