Hi Everyone!
Happy ORC Wednesday loves. Boy do I have an update for you this week! I made it back home from North Carolina last night and I’m so excited about today’s post. Its a good one yall.
This week a major house dream of mine came true. FRIENDS! WE HAVE NATURAL LIGHT IN OUR BATHROOM!! *cue hallelujah’s and praise dancing*
Words can’t even explain how ecstatic I am right now friends. From the moment we moved into #thecottagebungalow and started dreaming up renovations and planning home improvements, adding a skylight in the bathroom has been at the very top of the wish list. I’m so excited to partner with Velux to make that a reality.
I first discovered Velux months ago through Instagram and immediately headed to their site to research the brand and the different products they offer. I very quickly realized no one does skylights like Velux and that they are world renowned for their products.
When working with Velux we started with an in-home consultation from my local sales team? There are several things to consider prior to installing a skylight so we needed to first ensure it was something our home could structurally accommodate. This is especially important when you’re working with an older home. After determining the space could physically handle the installation we moved on to deciding on a specific product and placement within the space. We originally wanted an application in which the entire ceiling came out and would be vaulted, but after realizing we needed to work around a portion of the HVAC unit in the attic the Velux team came up with a design that would allow for maximum light output while still giving us an interesting architectural detail in the space.
When it came time to select a product for the bathroom it was about more than just aesthetics and light, I also wanted something that could provide an added layer of functionality by helping with ventilation AND that could give us access to fresh air. The new Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylight was the perfect choice.
This skylight option is perfect for us for several reasons
- Solar Powered-Super energy efficient and uses sunlight to charge the battery system that operates the skylight. No wiring required!
- Remote Controlled-Easy to open and close at the touch of a button with a convenient remote.
- Fresh Air-One of the biggest problems we had in this space was with moisture and lack of ventilation. Between its small size, no window, and an old barely functioning exhaust fan it was all bad. Being able to open the skylight and let in fresh air has been so refreshing…literally.
- Innovative Technology-Includes an integrated rain sensor that closes the skylight at the first indication of rain.
- Leak Free Promise-VELUX No Leak Skylights carry a 10-year installation warranty, plus 20 years on glass, 10 years on product, and five years on blinds and controls.
It also comes with a blind for light control and convenience. You can choose either a blackout or light filtering option and they come in many many colors and even some patterned styles.
One of things Im constantly saying when it comes to design in a small space is to use your walls, and too often people forget about the fifth wall…the ceiling. There are so many fantastic design moments to be made by using your ceiling as an intentional part of the design of a space, and when it comes to spaces like small bathrooms with no other option for integrating a window or door as a natural light source looking to the ceiling and installing a skylight is a no brainer. Walking in and seeing so much natural light come pouring through our little bathroom is enough to bring tears to my eyes. If you have been considering adding a skylight in your home I highly recommend finding an installer in your area and requesting a consulation. Velux also offers sun tunnel skylights which are great in just about any location as well.
We got through the installation and framing last week and tomorrow they will drywall and finish up the final install details. We left the ceiling open so the electrician can easily access everything when relocating the lighting and exhaust fan.
Ok friends, we are halfway through ORC and Im looking around at all the things that still need to be done. Not gonna lie… I might be freaking out just a little. And by a little, I definitely mean A LOT. Check in with you next week loves.

congrats on the skylight. I live in a row house with a skylight in the bathroom and it’s basically the brightest room in the house.

I think this is the unsung hero of home reno. My sister added one to her small kitchen and it made the room feel SO much bigger. I don’t think it was so much the light, which is a big plus of course, as the added height because it still feels different at night.
