Hi Everyone!
Ah the hallway. One of my favorite spaces on the ol’-I’ve-started-and-still-haven’t-finished-yet list. Last year I began to give it a fresh new look and I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect rug for it since. It has not been easy.
This space is really tricky friends. It’s super narrow and L shaped, and has pretty much no natural light source at all. It does get a little but of light that spills over into it now that the skylight has been installed in the bathroom, but other than that its pretty dark if the bedroom doors are closed…which they basically are all the time. Even still, I wanted to make this space look as good as possible. Hallways are often forgotten since they are just thoroughfare’s and I think there far too many missed opportunities to make big design statements with them.
Since the summer I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect rug for the space and let me tell you it has NOT been an easy feat. It needed to fill a pretty tall order. Lets see it needed:
- to be vintage
- around 10 ft long
- no more than around 2 1/2 ft wide
- no red
- moody and rich colors
- to have just enough blue for it to compliment the wallpaper but not too much for it to feel matchy matchy
- to be really soft underfoot
- to have some character and an interesting pattern
I mean, no big deal right? Ha! Well I finally found one that checked all the boxes from a shop called Swoon Rugs. I was able to find a few that I liked in the shop:
Tabitha is so amazing and gets in the most fabulous vintage rugs of all shapes and sizes. She’s so helpful and makes the buying process really easy. Shes also a whiz at Photoshop and can send you mock ups of rugs in your space so you can visualize what they will look like in place. I was trying decide between a few options and she created these for me:
They really helped me narrow down my choice. I knew which one was my favorite the second I saw it, and once she sent me pictures of them in my space it was instant confirmation that it HAD to be that one. So here it is!
I LOVE that its not a perfect match to the walls. I intentionally wanted to to something richer and that would read as more eclectic in the space.
The colors are SO SO AMAZING guys. It has so many of the colors seen throughout our home: black, coral, indigo, purple, emerald, and brown. I couldn’t love it more. Plus it’s incredibly soft underfoot. It’s just perfect!
It makes me so happy when guests come over and are surprised by the hallway when they round the corner on the way to the bathroom. I’m excited to get started on curating the walls now. I’m thinking I’ll move the peacock mirror over to the hall across from the bathroom door and create a gallery wall of African masks on the main wall.
Also, these pics remind me I really need to wipe down Bryanna’s door. I’ll get around to it when I change out her door handles.
Until next time friends…

Oh my goodness this is just so, SO good! I start every day looking at vintage rugs on eBay (even though I have not quite 1 spot left for one to live!) and yours makes my color-loving heart sing. Plus, it plays so nicely with that dreamy Milton & King wallpaper. I have what I affectionately call a ‘hallway’ (less than 2’6″ wide x 3’6″ long) dressed in a diy fabric wall treatment (something of a specialty of mine ; ), a painted built-in linen closet (inspired by William McLure’s faux armoire in his Birmingham, AL. apartment) with a deep magenta ceiling and sometimes I think it’s my favorite ‘room’ in my home. It’s wonderful to watch you collaborate with your spaces -I am regularly inspired by the developments. (ps. I loved that waterfall burlwood coffee table from a previous post! Wishing you luck finding the right piece for your family and your home.)
