Hi Everyone!
So now that we are almost out of January I feel like its time to pop in and talk about our home goals for this year. I feel a big shift all round when it comes to our home and the way we live in it. There are so many big things happening this year for our family and I feel like we are in a place we haven’t been in since we moved here. Our daughter is graduating high school this year, my sister and her children are moving here, Naomi had a job change in the last half of 2019 which we are still getting accustomed to and my work has changed drastically since moving in as well. Just so many big things.
This year will make six years since our downsize into this home. SIX YEARS. I’m still floored that so much time has passed already. This home had always been one of transition for me and I definitely feel much more settled in it now than I have in years past. Last year we didn’t really plan any major work on the house at all, but rather wanted to focus on things like finishing up some projects we started in 2018, increasing our push for sustainable practices, and getting organized. I thought I would do a little check in to see where we landed with our home goals for 2019 before diving into what I’ve got my sights on this year.
2019 Goals
Our outdoor spaces were the primary focus for me in terms of home projects and I think we did pretty good. I had hoped to have our deck and potager garden built going into 2020, but was only able to manage getting the garden to a place where we will be able to plant this spring! I also wanted to give our bedroom a refresh and we got a great start on that.

I’m sooo excited about the moody direction this room is headed in. Additionally I wanted to finish up the laundry and bathrooms and they both got done…sorta! The laundry room is still awaiting floors, but that will be done when we tackle the kitchen floors. I haven’t yet shared the bathroom reveal, but the space is done and that will be coming up soon. Finally, we did get going on our organization and sustainability goals and this will be a continued process.
I’m not mad at how things went down in #thecottagebungalow in 2019. Now lets talk about what my goals are for this year.
2020 HOME GOALS
Garden, Deck, & Backyard.
This is absolutely the year of outdoor for us. I’ve had SO MANY ideas about how I want this space to look and feel. We’ve literally spent the last 5 years just bouncing ideas around, pinning all the things, and really really thinking about how we want to use the amazing space we have. Over the summer we had a local landscape company come and work with me to put pen to paper a design plan for us to work from.
It was such a huge deal and felt like a big step toward the creation of our backyard goals. We’ve been hard at work on the potager garden already and the deck build begins next month! After going back and forth over whether we wanted to try to DIY or hire out we decided in the end to bring in the professionals for the deck process. We have a lot of variables we have to work around for the space so I felt like it was better to bring in someone better equipped to handle it. We hired a landscape contractor to build out the deck and to take care of some much needed drainage issues we’ve had since we moved in. We will also be taking on a DIY pea gravel patio, planting several shade trees, having a concrete slab poured, and working on reviving our lawns. The biggest regret I have on our home renovation journey so far is that we did tackle out outdoor spaces first. If I could go back and do it again I would absolutely have put work into the backyard before we ever did anything inside. Landscaping takes time to develop and grow and had we done it six years ago when we moved in we would have well established spaces by now. I’m so ready to get this project started.
Kitchen Completion
This is one I’ve been going back and forth about for a couple of years now. Our kitchen has always been a bit of a “project in progress”, but after almost six years it’s time to fiinish it.
This space has served us well and many of its components are perfect, but I would love for it to be just a little bit more functional. The plan is to integrate some new areas in with the existing layout, while also changing out a few things to give it a fresh new look. There’s a good chance it wont look very much like this once its done.
Large Furniture Purchases
This is also the year I’d like to pull the trigger on some larger furniture pieces we’ve been wanting, specifically a new custom sleeper sofa, outdoor furniture, a few pieces for our bedroom, and some vintage pieces .
Master Bedroom
We got a good start on the bedroom last year, and this year we’ll be finishing it up
This space still needs nightstands, lighting, a rug, and we also will be making some changes to our PAX closet. The new deck will be right off the bedroom so this will be a very special space when its all said and done. It seems as though in general we tend to leave our master bedrooms for last when it comes to prioritizing spaces and the order we take on projects. I think this has to do with wanting to make sure the shared spaces in a home get taken care of first, and since master bedrooms are private they often fall to the bottom of the list. That’s certainly the case for us, so this year we will be giving it some much needed attention.
Smart Home Tech
Any thing we can do to help make our home run more efficiently, and easily integrate into our busy lives I’m there this year. I’ve been wanting a Ring and a Nest for some time now so those will be a couple of new tech upgrades coming up. Right before the holidays we installed some Caseta by Lutron smart lighting and I LOVE it…so much so that I plan to add more to the house! Naomi is NOT on board with Alexa and/or Google Home so those won’t be happening, but we are interested in ways we can make our home smarter through day to day technology. I’m also maybe thinking of looking into solar as well.
Alright friends so there you have it. Our list of goals I’d love to achieve in our home this year. There aren’t many, but they are mighty. Here’s to hoping I can get it all done. What do you have planned for your home this year? Id love to hear. Until next time……

Landscape goals are a big one for me too. It’s also the most expensive! I hope to get our driveway done next year (fingers crossed). Love your home & style!
