Hi Everyone!
Hopefully by now you seen the reveal of my most recent project with VELUX, The Brighten Up Any Room Giveaway makeover, over on Emily’s blog.
If you haven’t seen it yet make sure you head over there and check it out! I shared an in depth break down of Viet (our awesome giveaway winner) and the space she nominated, as well as how I made this really small space super multi-functional over on her blog. Today I’m here to talk specifically about the color aspect of the room and how the new VELUX Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights played a role in the overall look and feel of a space so heavily drenched in color.
Upon my first visit to Viet’s house I was SO EXCITED to see this incredible golden yellow paint color on the walls. As a reminder, this is the room we started with
It was such a pleasant surprise and I immediately felt like it had to stay. I envisioned the space with new skylights letting in all the amazing natural light pouring down over these sunny yellow walls. I wanted this space to radiate joy and happiness, and to quite literally bring the sunshine in. Thankfully, Viet was fully on board with keeping the color so we took it up to the ceilings and painted the doors, baseboard and window trim as well.
Viet shared with me that she loved the color, but just wasn’t sure if she had made the right choice once it was in the room. She had the right idea, but things fell a little flat because she relied on a small north facing window and artificial light in the space, which wasn’t allowing for the true color to really shine through, Once the skylights were installed the color really came to life.
Now that we could see the true nuance of the color in the beautiful natural light ( I mean, COME ON!!!) I decided on the color story for the rest of the room. Viet’s home is full of color inspiration. As soon as you step through the front door you’re greeted by colorful wallpaper, furniture and accessories, so continuing that into this space was a priority. One of the first things I noticed about the room prior to the makeover was this incredible blanket she had draped over the bed! I definitely wanted to highlight that piece in the new space. The colors in it are so amazing and I just loved the way it looked with the walls.
Viet also already had some pretty amazing art and decor I planned to bring back in the space which served as my starting point for the overall scheme. As I introduced new art and accessories to the room I chose to go for highly saturated and vibrant colors to compliment the energy of the walls and the bright natural light the room now had.
One of the most common things I hear as a designer is people’s hesitation to use color in a small space because they either think it will be too much, or they feel like their room doesn’t get enough natural light. The latter is much more the case when wanting to use darker, moodier color. I always encourage people to lean into the space, no matter its size. Oftentimes the smaller the space, the bolder you can be with color and once VELUX skylights enter the picture it opens up a whole new world of color possibility.
A favorite small space design trick I often use is to carry your color from the floor to the ceiling including any trim, moldings, etc. Really this is great in any size space, but especially so for smaller spaces when you want to maximize visual lines. Draping a room in color carries the eye throughout the space and doesn’t give it a stopping point as it would if you’re ceilings and/or trim were white. It’s such an easy and impactful way to elevate a small space and make it feel larger.
I’m so glad Viet was so open to keeping the color and really going for it in here because just that small addition of the color on the ceiling in the space is SO amazing. It served as a wonderful anchor to highlight her special art and beloved momentos. The potential was always there and I’m so honored to be able to make this space work for her and her family. She loved the room (geniune shock and awe!) and I’m absolutely thrilled for them.
I’m so grateful for this work I get to do and for incredible brand partners that allow me to change people’s lives through the impact of design. It really is such a wonder and a privilege. I’m ready for the next challenge so who wants me to come make their #smallhomebigstyledreams come true?
Until next time friends…..

Shavonda- I am so grateful to you and Velux for all of the incredible thoughtfulness and care that went into the design of this room. It feels like a warm hug every time I step in to work. We are so excited to host guests as it feels like an oasis in our home. I think the most surprising thing to me was how much of our already owned items were used in the room. It truly feels like it’s *our* room. We loved getting to know you and we loved working with the team from velux. Everyone has been so incredibly kind and we are so touched. Working with you has been so affirming, joyful, and fun! Thank you again, Shavonda!
