Hi Everyone!
I’m back with another update of our primary bedroom makeover, AKA, #proojectthebombcyclonemadeusdoit. If you haven’t been following along on this renovation, please catch up here . Today I’m so excited to be sharing our almost complete space.
Going into this project I had a very specific vision in mind. I wanted our bedroom to feel like a “bougie well-appointed super comfortable cave.” I wanted it to be a space where we feel enveloped by deep, rich, moody color, and a place where we can really slumber. The room has an awkward shape and rather than trying to “correct” it, we decided to lean in and work with it.
During the renovation process we kept the structure of the room the same. We focused on bringing the space up to code and current standards with updated electrical and new drywall. We also raised the ceiling height as much as possible (those few extra inches really make a difference!), leveled the foundation and added new floors. We also added inexpensive wood tongue and groove planks to the ceiling for a bit of visual interest and texture.
But the real hero of this story is the colorrrrrrr!!! I’ve been wanting to design a chocolate brown room for a long time and I just knew this was the perfect project to use it. I used Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex paint in the color Black Bean SW6006 and oh my goodness! How delicious is this color! As I do with almost every room, I painted the entire space including walls, ceiling, baseboards and French doors all in the same color. This is one of my biggest design rules for when working in a small or awkward space. In this case it really creates that moody cave-like vibe I’m going for in the space.
We replaced the old basic barn sliding door with a pair of very old doors from Morocco and I am OBSSSSEEESSSSEDD! They are massive and intricate, and so so gorgeous. They really have such presence and give the space a feeling of permanence. They make this awkward room that was a bit of an afterthought to the original layout of the house feel intentional and important. You can’t help but wonder what’s behind these really cool doors!
As I was planning the renovation and design of the room I decided to swap the layout of the space. We moved the bed over to the wall where the wardrobes were before, and moved the wardrobes over to where we used to have the bed. This created a small dressing area within the room that we are really loving. We were even able to add a few more wardrobes for added closet storage, and I was able to create a vanity area in front of the window as well.
I always talk about how space planning is my favorite part of the design process, and it was an especially fun challenge to come up with a new way to use this space. Creating a new footprint for the room that now gives us more dedicated storage for Naomi’s sneaker collection was a top priority. We did this by adding three additional PAX wardrobe units that are an extension of our existing wardrobes. We added these on either side of the door and in a previously underutilized corner.
As you can see the wardrobes still need to be addressed. We haven’t touched them yet because we can’t decide how we want to update them. We know we want to tackle a fairly simple DIY to give them a fresh new look, but we keep wavering back and forth over what that looks like. We have narrowed it down to three options:
- Paint them the same color as the walls and add modern large scale hardware. This will give that fantastic monochromatic look that I love so much and add to the cave-like vibe even more. I really really like the idea of painting them the same color as the walls to make them fade into the walls and give a bit more of a minimal feel to the room.
- Wallpaper them with a fun print or mural. I like this idea because I just adore wallpaper and every other room in our house has wallpaper in it. I’ve also never wallpapered a piece of furniture so I think it would be a fun challenge to tackle.
- DIY cane fronts. I like this option because of the texture and interest it would add to the units. The cane would work well with the other very textural elements in the room and I think it would make them feel more like custom furniture as well.
We are still very torn, so until we decide which way we want to go they will just stay in their original untouched state. In the meantime I just love this space so so much. It feels like a completely different room….so much more elevated and so much more like a primary bedroom. Alrighty, I’m off to flip a coin over what to do with these wardrobes.
Until next time friends…..

Any recommendations for sourcing doors like the Moroccan ones? We have a very 2016 barn door sliding door for our pantry and I’d love to swap it for something that better fits our global eclectic vibe

This bedroom makeover is absolutely stunning! The rich, moody color creates a cozy, luxurious atmosphere, and those Moroccan doors are a showstopper. The thoughtful rearrangement of the space is brilliant, especially with the added dressing area and increased storage for Naomi’s sneakers. The color choices are impeccable, and the dilemma about updating the wardrobes just adds to the exciting design journey. Whichever option you choose, it’s bound to enhance this already fabulous space. Can’t wait to see the final decision—every detail is pure inspiration!

I would paint the wardrobes to match the walls so they disappear. But maybe do a large scale abstract brushstroke across some of them to pull your eye around the space add some spunky fun.
