Hi Everyone!
I can’t even believe I’m about to type these words: My daughter is a junior! *cue hysterical mom tears*. Bryanna was just about to enter 8th grade when we moved into this house. I just sat back and thought about how much time has passed. It genuinely seems like just yesterday.
When it comes to the house Bry really pulled the winning stick. She is in the largest room in the house and it also happens to be the master bedroom. Now thats not necesarrily saying much since our house is on the smaller side in general, but still. Naomi and I don’t even technically have a room, so yeah…she’s winning.
This year to prep for back to school we decided it was time she got a bit of a room update. We haven’t done much in her space since we moved in and now with her heading in to the last two years of high school it felt like the right time to give it some focused attention.
Junior year is a big deal. Perhaps the most important year of high school. This is the year to really focus on college prep, her course load is intense, her social life is amped up, not to mention the fact that at 16 she’s now very into self care and appearance. Plus, at this point when she is home, she spends most of her time in her room and has lots of friends over for study dates and or sleepovers. We really needed to create a space that would be condusive to all the things.
I gave her complete control over the design of the space. I wanted her to choose the pieces she wanted based on how she felt she would use them and what she felt like she needed. I always tell clients to create spaces that bring them joy and that really work FOR them and thier specific needs, and I wanted Bry to do the same. We came up with a space plan based on the layout of her room and then I let her choose the pieces she wanted based on her style and needs. Her space is a little awkward and furniture placement is tricky because she has four windows, a built in armoire, and a small closet to work around.
Bryanna’s style is so different than mine as she prefers much more modern, and minimal design. Honestly I have no idea how she’s even my kid! But, that’s why creating this space for her with IKEA was so great. Their mission is to create a better everyday life for the many people, and they make it so easy to make meaningful spaces because its incredibly affordable, and every piece is designed with intention.
The first order of business was addressing her clothing storage needs. She originally had a large chest of drawers but she decided to trade that in for a set of smaller drawers that also function as nightstands.
She loves the clean lines and modern look of the MALM dressers, and they provide plenty of space for her clothes and give lots of room for bedside essentials. She chose the HEMMA cord set to create some hanging lights. She hasnt settled on what she wants for the shades just yet, but they give a clean look for now.
Next, she really really wanted a vanity area, but with limited space we needed to find something narrow enough to still allow for her to walk around, get dressed, etc. She chose the MALM dressing table and its the perfect size and scale.
Its just narrow enough to comfortably fit, and it also functions as a desk. She mostly does her homework spread out on her bed, but its great to have a space to also sit with a laptop and have a flat surface to write on.
Finally she wanted a dressing zone so we carved out an area with a big floor to ceiling mirror and brought in a clothes rack to keep weekly outfits and favorite clothes at the ready. She chose the HOVET mirror and RIGGA clothes rack combo with BUMERANG hangers.
She already owned the RASKOG storage cart and it makes for great additional storage.
Its one of my favorite IKEA pieces becuase its just really great for tons of different situations. I think everyone should have one! I love that so many IKEA products are multi funtional and adaptable for your individual needs.
She loves her room so much and she can’t wait to add to it. We are still on the hunt for a rug and some new bedding, but we are well on our way. Until next time friends…

Love this; her room is so bright! I recently upgraded Miss A’s room with light grey paint and an IKEA Fjälkinge shelf with drawers. It hogs up a wall but is so streamlined, and narrow, that the space feels brighter.

I bet that looks amazing!
