Hi Everyone!
Happy Tuesday loves. Its Spring Break this week and I couldn’t be happier to take a break from the daily grind. I’m taking the opportunity to sleep in, pop into some of my fav thrift stores, catch up on blog reading, and dive into a few projects. During this bit of downtown I’ve also been taking a moment to watch TV….which doesn’t get to happen very often around here. Like at all. Which brings me to the ugly elephant in the room…our sofa.
Gaaaaah this damn sofa. Those of you who’ve been with me for a while know how much I loathe this thing. Yet, for some reason im completely paralyzed with indecision about what to replace it with. I mean do I splurge on something I really really want? Do I think smart and realize a splurge might not be the best investment with kids and a great dane puppy? Callie is actually really really good and is not destructive at all. She doesn’t scratch or chew or bite on any of our furniture, ever..so that’s always a consideration too? Do I go new? Do I go with something secondhand and attempt a rescue. I mean, honestly a lot of times reupholstery can cost as much, if not MORE, than new. Seriously guys why is this so freakin difficult?
As a completely rational person I am more than aware that stressing over a sofa is absolutely ridiculous, and that there are so many more important things in life. But I think I’m putting so much mental energy into this because last time I made a bad choice and I’ve been stuck with it for 9 years. Back before my days of tapping into my passion for design, I went with what was popular and most available everywhere…generic, overstuffed and massive. I pulled a Emily Henderson no-no and have been regretting it for about 7 years now.
Now those of you who know me know I have a massive weakness for chesterfield sofas. I’ve talked about it here, and here. I was pretty well convinced that a chester was definitely our next sofa purchase and we would live happily ever after forever and I would just keep reupholstering for the rest of my days….That is until I saw Abigail’s home tour
Holy English Roll Arm. Cue screeching record stop. Ummm yeah. So now I’m a cheater guys. I’m sorta kinda obsessed with them. I don’t know what it is about em, but I just love their visual presence. Plus, they look comfy. Plus they are classic and timeless and I wont get sick of it in 2 years.
I just
cant
get enough
I definitely prefer the tight back style because back cushions are the DEVILLLLLLL! At least in my house they are. My son literally ALWAYS throws the back cushions off when he sits. #boys. As far as affordability these beauties range from laughable expensive, to I can handle that. I’ve found a few that are not only affordable, but also accessible.
How bout you guys? Are you a fan? Until next time…

You know I love me a Chesterfield but totally GET IT. These are beauties and classic in their own right and LUSH in velvet (but then I have a weakness for velvet in any state really). Oh and I totally understand buying something that seemed good enough at the time, I’ve made the same mistake! My last sofa I hated as soon as it was delivered (!!) and then I had to live with it for 7 years, the big tan leather monstrosity. But we both know better now, right?! And I bought my Chesterfield 5 years ago now and still love it – you’ll be fine 😉 xxx

I love them, they look like the perfect combo of comfort and style. IKEA has a new version, haven’t seen it in person yet but they have it online

Hi there! Yes, Ive seen the Ikea version. Its nice in person, but on the small side and It doesn’t look like its as sturdy as it should be. I do really love the look of that one though. I actually meant to share pics of it in this post, but forgot to:)

I’m with ya on the English Roll Arm. I love them done in velvet. And You are right about the tight back. Back cushions can look so messy.
You might like the Carlisle from Pottery Barn. And it can be ordered with a slipcover. Perfect for kids & pets.

I love English roll arm sofas! So timeless and pretty. But chesterfields!! How can you resist a chesterfield?! I’m envisioning a bright awesome color like chartreuse or pink. At least you can’t go wrong between the two.
By the way – I have that World Market sofa in brown microfiber. I wouldn’t recommend it. My husband can lift it by himself and he isn’t exactly Mr. Muscle so that gives you an idea of what the quality is like. It’s great for someone just out of college moving into their first apartment, but I’d go with something more substantial.
